On Sunday 15 June 2014 the operator of the Darwin LNG facility, ConocoPhillips, will move a large new piece of equipment by road from the Port of Darwin to its plant on Wickham Point Road. There will be temporary disruption to the flow of traffic in Yarrawonga and Coolalinga.

ConocoPhillips is committed to the highest standards of safety, which includes public safety during this move. ConocoPhillips Darwin Operations Manager Stephen Thatcher said that the company is focused on ensuring a safe journey with minimal disruption to the community.

“We encourage road users and pedestrians to avoid the route and follow the instructions of the traffic controllers,” said Mr Thatcher.

Plans for the safe transport of the 250 metre long convoy include lane and road closures, traffic diversions/detours, traffic control, adjusted speed limits and associated signage.

The equipment will be transported by four prime movers with a combined length of 85 metres, height of 6.8 metres, width of 8.6 metres and total weight of more than 750 tonnes. The 62 kilometre journey will be on public roads for approximately six hours, travelling at an average of 25 kilometres per hour.

The equipment is a carbon dioxide absorber, which plays an important role in the LNG production process.

Mr Thatcher said “The absorber is being replaced to extend the life of the Darwin LNG facility, demonstrating ConocoPhillips long-term commitment to the Territory.”

Northern Territory Minister for Transport, Peter Styles congratulated the various Territory Departments who had collaborated to support ConocoPhillips for almost two years of planning.

“I’m pleased to recognise the efforts of the Departments of Transport, Infrastructure, the NT Police, Power and Water and the haulage companies – who have worked on this project for almost two years,” said Minister Styles.

“Safety is our number one priority and the detailed traffic management plan includes a number of public safety measures, to ensure everyone stays safe while this wide load is on our roads.

“We acknowledge the short term disruption to traffic, but our continued support of the local oil and gas industry will ensure ongoing economic prosperity for the Territory which drives the development of Northern Australia.”

The 62 kilometre route departs from the Berrimah Road weighbridge at 6.30am on Sunday and travels:

  • Down Berrimah Road turning right onto Tiger Brennan Drive.
  • Continues on Tiger Brennan Drive/Stuart Highway, turning right onto Jenkins Road.
  • Turns left onto Channel Island Road.
  • Turns right onto Wickham Point Road and travel full length to Darwin LNG facility

The convoy is expected to reach the Arnhem Hwy intersection at 10am, and be off Stuart Highway by 12noon.

Road users will have a number of opportunities to safely overtake the convoy, with five stopping points and an additional three pullover points.
