How does ConocoPhillips comply with Australia’s environmental regulations?

• Natural gas development and habitat/species protection can be accomplished together. Our operations are purposefully designed to prioritise safety and environmental responsibility, with oversight from an expert independent regulator.
• Australia’s cornerstone environmental law—the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act)—sets rigorous requirements for assessing and approving activities that may impact key environmental assets. It is the legal framework for protection of threatened species, world heritage sites, marine areas, wetlands, and other matters of national environmental significance. At our APLNG facility examples include:

• Curtis Island: We partnered with the other LNG proponents on Curtis Island and initiated a landmark conservation initiative where nearly two thirds of the island is now managed under a conservation management strategy.
• Water: We actively manage water discharged from the APLNG facility with a routine monitoring program in place to assess water quality prior to discharge to municipal systems and at each stormwater discharge point, as well as the receiving environment discharge mixing zone.
• Light: During the facility’s construction, we lowered the height of our lights and used material to minimise glare for nocturnal animals.
• Local marine species: We invested in a ten-year research program to monitor turtle populations and inform how we manage light from the APLNG facility to mitigate any potential impact, as well as uncovering new science that is now helping other industries to protect turtles.
• Curtis Island vegetation: We actively monitor the mangroves surrounding our LNG facility and have observed sustained long-term health of this vegetation through these studies.
• Research: We have invested in multiple research programs to fill knowledge gaps including, a decade-long Long-Term Turtle Management Plan, Gladstone Healthy Harbour Partnership and Port Curtis Harbour Watch.

For our Otway Exploration Drilling Program examples include:

• Marine Fauna: We put in place comprehensive monitoring and mitigation measures for marine fauna, For example, the Federal Government Regulation requirement for vessels to not approach within 150 m for dolphins has also been applied to seals, marine turtles and flocks of rafting or foraging birds to mitigate disturbance and the risk of a collision. • Light: We created a Light Management Plan to ensure that light emissions during exploration activities are minimised to protect seabirds and other species in the area, and that procedures are in place to support grounded birds. Source: Protecting Marine Wildlife | ConocoPhillips Australia
• Sound: Extensive noise modelling was conducted to assess the distances over which exploration activities have the potential to impact marine mammals, known as the ‘effect distance’. • Environmental Performance Outcomes: We developed specific and measurable benchmarks for environmental performance that we are seeking to achieve for the life of the activity such as protecting biologically important behaviours (such as foraging and breeding) so that they can continue while activities are being undertaken. • Research: We have supported local research institutes including the Dolphin Research Institute, who are expanding their Two Bays Whale Program; and the Arthur Rylah Institute, in expanding their southern right whale aerial monitoring program along the Victorian coastline for the 2023-25 season.
