The first intake of 20 Operations Technicians have today graduated from the ConocoPhillips Operations Technician Foundations Training Program, marking the start of their journey as employees new to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry.

ConocoPhillips, one of the largest energy companies in the world and operator of the Australia Pacific LNG facility on Curtis Island, launched the training program in July this year as a unique partnership between ConocoPhillips, Central Queensland Institute of TAFE, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Petroskills.

Warwick King, President ConocoPhillips East, said the five-month training program was designed to help up-skill workers in an emerging industry, as well as support local employment.

“It’s terrific to see our first intake of employees graduating today from an LNG training program delivered here in Gladstone.

“Over half of the group is from Gladstone, which is testament to our commitment to provide career paths for local people wishing to pursue a career in LNG,” Mr King said.

The Operations Technician ‘Foundations Program’ is a five-month intensive course covering the fundamentals of hydrocarbon principles and LNG processing.

The graduating Operations Technicians will now move on to further training in areas specific to the facility and operational equipment, as well as in commissioning activities, as Australia Pacific LNG prepares to commence operations in mid-2015.

Recruitment for Australia Pacific LNG Operations Technicians and support staff will continue through 2014.
