Today in Dili, ConocoPhillips together with the Government of Timor-Leste celebrated the graduation of 14 students from the 2018 Foundational Skills Training and Internship Program – Phase 1.

ConocoPhillips Australia and the Government of Timor-Leste have collaborated to develop a two-phase program to provide young Timorese professionals with the opportunity to gain valuable technical and on-the job experience in the oil and gas industry.

Following the success of a pilot program in 2014 to 2015, the parties agreed to conduct a second 18-month program, which commenced in November 2018. The program is funded by the Bayu-Undan Project Joint Venture partners ConocoPhillips, Santos, INPEX, Eni and Tokyo Timor Sea Resources under a cost recoverable scheme.

Phase 1 of the Foundational Skills Training Program took place in Dili and Darwin over six months. The training provided participants with important foundational skills and knowledge about the oil and gas industry. It included subjects such as oil and gas safety; training in computer literacy and communication skills – all essential skills for future employment.

The Timorese graduates participating in the program were chosen from more than 1,000 applications from applicants across various universities and disciplines – following an extensive advertising campaign across the country.

ConocoPhillips Timor-Leste Country Manager, José Lobato Gonçalves, personally congratulated the training program graduates at a ceremony in Dili.

“On behalf of ConocoPhillips and our Bayu-Undan JV Partners, we congratulate the graduates for their enthusiasm and commitment to this challenging training program,” said Mr Lobato Gonçalves.

“We were extremely pleased to work with representatives of the Autoridade Nacional do Petróleo e Minerais (ANPM) once again to deliver a second intake for the program.”

“As we approach Bayu-Undan’s end of field life, ConocoPhillips is proud to support training programs such as this, which aims to contribute to a more diversified workforce with transferable skills to support future Timor-Leste projects.”

Seven graduates from the Phase 1 program will be selected to receive internship positions with ConocoPhillips Australia for one year. The internships will provide participants with the chance to gain invaluable oil and gas industry experience in their individual disciplines.

ANPM Local Content Manager, Mr Estanislau Salsinha Martins said that on behalf of the Government of Timor-Leste, the ANPM congratulates each of the graduates for their courage and commitment to pursue a rare capacity building program carried out in the oil and gas sector.

“The ANPM appreciates the continuous good collaboration between Bayu-Undan Project Joint Venture partners ConocoPhillips, Santos, INPEX, Eni and Tokyo Timor Sea Resources to continue to fund the program under Bayu-Undan Local Content Cost-Recoverable Scheme”.

“The ANPM will continue to work with ConocoPhillips and Bayu-Undan Joint Ventures to initiate similar or other capacity building programs until the end of Bayu-Undan field life, to enhance the skills of Timorese workforce to compete in the labour market specifically in Timor-Leste and in the region,” said Mr Salsinha Martins. - ENDS -
