2014 Foundational Skills training and Internship Program

Today in a ceremony in Dili, ConocoPhillips together with the Government of Timor-Leste welcomed 12 graduates into the 2014 Foundational Skills Training and Internship Program – Phase 1.

The two phase program was developed in collaboration with the Government of Timor-Leste. The program is funded by the Bayu-Undan Project joint venture partners ConocoPhillips, Santos, INPEX, Eni and Tokyo Timor Sea Resources under a cost recoverable scheme.

The Timorese graduates were chosen from more than 500 applications from graduates across various universities and disciplines – following an extensive advertising campaign across the country. Many graduates took part in an extensive selection process, with 12 chosen to participate in the Phase 1 training program. Six of the graduates have an exploration background, three in engineering, two in health, safety and environmental and one in finance.

ConocoPhillips Australia Vice President Paul Dubuisson was in Dili to formally welcome the successful Timorese graduates.

“On behalf of ConocoPhillips and our Bayu-Undan JV Partners, congratulations on being selected to join the training program,” said Mr Dubuisson.

“We were extremely pleased to work with representatives of the Autoridade Nacional do Petróleo (ANP), to design and agree on this effective training program. Their input and guidance has been extremely beneficial and the selection process provides an example of open and competitive recruitment.”

“ConocoPhillips is proud of the role we play in supporting the development of the people of Timor-Leste and we are very excited about the program, which aims to contribute to a more diversified workforce and reduce skill shortages in Timor-Leste.”

Phase 1 of the Foundational Skills Training Program takes place in Dili and Darwin over six months, and is being delivered by Charles Darwin University. The training provides Timorese graduates with important foundational skills and knowledge about the oil and gas industry. It includes subjects such as oil and gas safety; training in computer literacy and communication skills – all essential skills for future employment.

The Timorese graduates, who successfully complete Phase 1, will have the opportunity to apply for the Phase 2 Internship Program, where five students will receive internship positions with ConocoPhillips Australia for one year. The internships will provide participants with the chance to gain invaluable offshore and office based oil and gas industry experience.

“The ANP is committed to continuously working with oil and gas companies and service providers operating in its jurisdictions, to maximise opportunities for Timorese people to train with, and one day work in the oil and gas industry,” said ANP President Mr Gualdino da Silva.

“We thank ConocoPhillips and its joint venture partners for the chance to work together to develop the program. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for selected Timorese nationals to learn from an international oil and gas company.”

“We thank the JPDA Joint Commission, representing the Government of Timor-Leste and Australia, for their support in facilitating ongoing efforts in the employment and training for Timorese nationals, and permanent residents for JPDA related activities.”
