Darwin LNG entered into the West Arnhem Land Fire Management Agreement (WAFMA) which is a world-first initiative between Darwin LNG, the Northern Territory Government, the Northern Land Council and traditional Aboriginal land owners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The WAFMA project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Northern Territory by at least 2 million tonnes, over the next 17 years. The project will help conserve environmental and cultural values in the West Arnhem Land region, employ Aboriginal people and provide ConocoPhillips with a greenhouse gas offset strategy based on a decade of research and development.
The project involves prescribed burning of savanna grasses early in the dry season to minimize the occurrence of uncontrolled wildfires later in the dry season.
Fire management will be undertaken by Aboriginal traditional owners and land managers. It will involve annual planning, in consultation with the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts, to implement a system of strategic firebreaks along tracks and watercourses.
