Environmental responsibility

At ConocoPhillips we identify, assess and develop strategies to appropriately manage the environmental aspects of our projects. We also work with communities to develop environmentally friendly options.

As part of our commitment to acting with integrity and responsibility, employees work proactively to protect and preserve the environment in all the communities in which we operate.

ConocoPhillips is committed to the challenge of providing a secure energy future while preserving a stable environment. Globally, ConocoPhillips is actively involved in numerous initiatives that preserve and restore the environment and wildlife projects to guarantee a secure and sustainable environment for future generations.

Darwin LNG entered into the West Arnhem Land Fire Management Agreement (WAFMA) which is a world-first initiative between Darwin LNG, the Northern Territory Government, the Northern Land Council and traditional Aboriginal land owners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The WAFMA project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Northern Territory by at least 2 million tonnes, over the next 17 years. The project will help conserve environmental and cultural values in the West Arnhem Land region, employ Aboriginal people and provide ConocoPhillips with a greenhouse gas offset strategy based on a decade of research and development.

The reforestation of Timor-Leste is a major environmental initiative for the country, as it attempts to combat the effects of soil erosion, intensive land use for livestock and crops, fires, and over-logging for domestic purposes.

Planting more trees is one way to improve the country’s environment and local economy. To this end, ConocoPhillips has contributed more than $23,000 to partner with Santalum, a non-government organization, and Timor-Leste’s National Directorate of Forestry, to plant 5000 trees in the Tasi Tolu region, near Dili.

In 2008, Perth ConocoPhillips employees, contractors and their families worked with the local council for Planet Ark Tree Day.  The community environmental initiative contributed to the establishment of a green corridor along the Perth river foreshore with links to existing conservation reserves.
